"Today as I write this,
I am at the crossroads of my life.
I see the dark and I see the road,
That I believe will lead me,
Towards the light.
I have no idea where this narrow road,
Which is long and barely taken,
Will end up and if I should finish,
I wonder – will it be then I discover,
That I made the right choice,
To stay on this path, beaten at every step –
With the sins and the secrets, I have kept.
Within my soul lies,
The key to a great and beautiful life."
The words above are from my poem titled, Crossroads. You can get the book from which the poem came, Shadows: Poems of Reflection and Life here: SHADOWS and you can read the full version of the poem.
I wrote this poem at a time in my life where things could literally have gone two different ways. For those of you who know the movie Wizard of Oz, there is a part where Dorothy comes to her own crossroads and has to decide if she will go one way or the other. The unknown can be so exciting yet so difficult...
If I didn't choose to take the path of music, I wouldn't be writing this to you today. I'd probably be stuck in an office making a lot of money and trying to carve out a life of my own without my family always in my ear.
But sometimes you have to do the hard thing in order to get what you really want in life.
So instead of staying in the world of sports communication, I decided to sacrifice a little and keep at my real dream - being a singer.
Boy, am I glad I did. It's when I realized that something that still holds true for me today; Never Compromise On Your Dreams - because a moment's pain could add up to a lifetime's pleasure.
As I reflect back at those times of working 12-hour shifts trying to fit in where I wasn't wanted or appreciated and doing something I thought made everyone else happy; I realized that life isn't about pleasing everyone.
It's about pleasing yourself. If that makes you selfish, so be it. Life is more than trying to make sure you don't cross the line or don't take a chance. Life is about the long-term. Life is about love.
And if you don't love what you do - you can't love yourself fully and you can't live life to the fullest either.
So it took time and as the poems says; I wonder – will it be then I discover,
That I made the right choice.
I can honestly say it wasn't the easy choice. But it was the right one.
So here I am now several years later writing this Crossroads blog and seeing just how much stronger I am. Strength is the one thing no one can take away from you - especially when it comes to experience.
I see life as a chance. It's mine for the taking and if and when I come to a crossroads again in my life, I know that it's my strength and love that will carry me forward to the light.
What about you? How do you see life? Ever had to make a decision at a crossroads? I would love to hear your story. Share in the comments and remember, NEVER COMPROMISE ON YOUR DREAMS!!!
